The sun shines through the trees. It makes little spots of light on the grass. The forest is bright and green. Leaves wave in the breeze. Birds sing sweet songs outside.

Inside a cozy den, Lila the little fox wakes up. Her fur is soft and orange. Her big ears twitch. She feels excited. Today is her first trip outside.

Suddenly, Lila spots something moving near the bushes. She blinks her bright eyes. A funny animal pops up! It has soft brown fur and a round body. Its little paws dig in the dirt. Its nose wiggles, just like Lila’s. The animal stands up tall and looks around. Lila is curious. She wants to know what this animal is.

Lila creeps closer, careful not to scare it. Her tail flicks behind her. The animal hears her and turns around. It has friendly eyes and chubby cheeks. Lila smiles. She wonders if this new friend will play. The animal gives a small hop.

Lila whispers, "Hello!" She feels brave and gentle. The funny animal sniffs the air and looks at Lila. Lila waits quietly, hoping the animal will say hello too.

Lila walks under the tall trees. She hears the leaves whisper and feels the grass tickle her paws. Suddenly, she sees a round, sturdy animal digging in the dirt. He has black-and-white stripes on his face and soft gray fur. Lila feels a little shy. She wonders who he is.

The animal looks up. He smiles with bright, gentle eyes. "Hello, little fox," he says in a warm voice. "I am Bruno the badger. Are you new to the forest?"

Lila nods. Her big ears twitch. "Yes, I am Lila. This is my first day outside the den."

Bruno steps closer. He moves slowly so Lila feels safe. "In the forest, we greet friends with a nose-twitch," Bruno says. He wiggles his nose back and forth. It looks funny and friendly.

Lila giggles. She wiggles her own nose. Bruno smiles even wider. "That’s it!" he cheers.

Lila feels happy. She is not shy anymore. She and Bruno both wiggle their noses together. The sun shines on their fur. Lila learns the special greeting.

Bruno shows Lila how to sniff the air and listen to the sounds. "You can tell who is nearby by the smells and songs," he explains. Lila tries and smells sweet flowers and hears more birds.

Lila and Bruno sit in the soft grass. Lila feels warm and brave. She has made her first friend.

Lila and Bruno walk together under the leafy trees. The sun makes pretty shapes on the ground. Lila’s paws feel soft grass, and Bruno’s big feet make little prints in the dirt. They hear a tiny rustle up above. Lila looks up and sees a small brown squirrel sitting on a low branch. The squirrel’s bushy tail flicks back and forth. Her bright eyes peek down at Lila and Bruno.

Bruno smiles and says, “Hello, Willow! Would you like to come down?” Willow feels shy. She hides behind a leaf for a moment. Lila smiles gently and wiggles her big ears. She says, “Hello, Willow! We are learning the nose-twitch greeting.”

Willow peeks out from behind the leaf. She wants to join, but her paws feel shaky. Bruno says softly, “It is easy and fun. You just wiggle your nose.” Lila wiggles her little nose to show Willow.

Willow watches carefully. She takes a deep breath and climbs down the tree. Her small paws land gently on the soft grass. Lila and Bruno stand close by, smiling. Willow’s bushy tail curls around her feet. She looks at Lila, then at Bruno, and gives her nose a tiny twitch.

Lila and Bruno wiggle their noses back. Willow’s eyes grow bright. She feels brave and happy. “You did it, Willow!” Lila says. Willow smiles, and the three friends laugh softly together under the trees.

The forest feels full of joy. Birds sing, leaves flutter, and the friends stand close, feeling safe and glad.
