Getting Ready for Park Play

The sun shines through Rachel’s window. She wakes up and stretches her arms. Today is Saturday. Today feels special! Rachel looks out and sees green grass and bright flowers in her backyard.

Rachel hurries to get ready. She puts on her shorts and her green shirt. Her brown hair goes into a neat ponytail. She smiles and thinks about fun in the park.

“Jake, are you ready?” Rachel calls. Jake, her fluffy tan Cockapoo, jumps up and wags his tail. His floppy ears bounce as he runs to Rachel. She giggles and rubs his soft fur.

“Sara will be here soon,” Rachel says. Just then, the doorbell rings. Rachel opens the door and sees Sara, her best friend, standing outside. Sara wears pink overalls and has two shiny braids. She smiles big and waves.

“Good morning, Rachel!” Sara says. “I brought my favorite jump rope.”

“Let’s play in the park!” Rachel cheers. Sara nods. Jake barks softly, ready to run and play.

Rachel’s dad peeks into the hallway. He wears his green cap and gives a friendly smile. “Have fun, girls! I’ll be right here if you need me.”

The friends step outside. The air feels warm and fresh. Birds sing. Rachel, Sara, and Jake walk together toward the backyard gate. Rachel feels happy and a little excited. What new fun will they find today?

Rachel, Sara, and Jake hurry down the sidewalk. Their feet tap, tap, tap as they race toward the park gate. Jake's tail wags as he runs next to Rachel. The sun shines, and the air smells fresh. When they reach the park, swings sway, and children laugh.

Sara giggles, "Let's play on the slide!" Rachel nods, and Jake bounces after them. The playground is full of bright colors. Sara's pink overalls make her easy to spot. Rachel climbs the ladder, and Sara follows. Jake sniffs by the sandbox.

Soon, more kids join them. Rachel waves. "Hi, everyone!" The group grows bigger. A boy with short blond hair stands by a tree. He wears a striped shirt and jeans. Next to him is a small white puppy with big dark eyes. The puppy wiggles and sniffs the grass.

One of the kids says, "That’s Leo! He’s new. And that’s Willow, his puppy!" Rachel smiles and walks over with Sara and Jake. "Hi, Leo. Hi, Willow!" she says gently. Leo looks a little shy, but he smiles. Willow gives a soft, happy bark.

Jake and Willow sniff noses. Their tails wag. Willow jumps up and Jake runs in a circle. Leo laughs quietly. "Willow likes to play," he says.

Sara claps her hands. "Let’s all play together!" The kids run to the grass. Willow and Jake chase each other. Rachel and Leo watch with wide smiles.

Sara smiles. "We like to share. It's nice to help each other." Rachel nods. "Leo, do you like the park?" she asks.

Leo looks shy, but he starts to talk. "I just moved here. Everything is new. I didn't know anyone. Now, I feel happy because I have friends."

Sara says, "We moved last year. It felt a little scary, too." Rachel adds, "Me too! But it got better when I met Sara and Jake."

Rachel smiles gently. “Let’s help the turtle find its home.” Leo nods. He feels happy to help. The friends talk quietly so the turtle won’t feel scared. Sara holds out her hand, but the turtle stays still.
