A New Home and a Gentle Worry
2 min read
Jillian walks into her new house. The walls are bright and the windows let in soft sunlight. She holds her favorite blue sweater close. Her brown hair shines in the gentle light. Jillian’s shoes make quiet sounds on the wood floor. Everything feels fresh and new.
Her mother, Joyce, smiles and gives Jillian a warm hug. Joyce’s short black hair looks neat, and her navy uniform is crisp. “Let’s make this place cozy,” she says in a kind voice. Jillian nods and smiles, but inside she feels a small worry. Her mother is home now, but sometimes she is busy or away at work.
Jillian’s father, John, carries boxes to the living room. He is tall and gentle, wearing gym clothes. “We can play outside later,” he says. Jillian likes the idea, but she still feels a tiny worry in her chest.
Nathan and Nicole come in next. Nathan wears a team shirt and grins. Nicole has long brown hair and friendly eyes. She listens to music and helps Jillian unpack her things. They laugh and talk, making the house feel warm and safe.
Jillian walks to her new room. She looks at the quiet space and sits on her bed. She thinks about her gentle worry. She wants her mother close, but she feels shy about saying it.
Her family is busy making the house nice. Jillian hears their voices and feels calm. She hugs her blue sweater and wonders if it is okay to share her feelings.

“Mom,” Jillian said quietly, “I want to share something with you.” Joyce smiled and nodded. She gently squeezed Jillian’s hand, just like she always did when Jillian felt shy.
Jillian looked down at her sneakers. “Some kids at school say I don’t dress or act like a girl. It makes me feel sad. I try to be myself, but their words hurt.” Her voice was small, but Joyce listened closely.
Joyce wrapped her arms around Jillian in a warm hug. “You are wonderful just the way you are,” Joyce said softly. “Your dad and I always want you to feel safe and happy. If you want, we can talk to your teachers again.”
Jillian nodded slowly. “I would be okay with that. But there’s something else I need to tell you.”
Joyce’s eyes were gentle. “You can tell me anything. I am always here for you.” Jillian felt her worry lift just a little. She knew her mom was listening and cared.
