Lost in the Garden
The sun was warm in the big garden. Green leaves waved in the breeze. Tall flowers stood like soft towers, pink, yellow, and blue. Midnight, the tiny black kitten with bright green eyes and a white-tipped tail, peeked out from behind a daisy. Buddy, the beagle puppy with brown and white fur and big floppy ears, wagged his tail and sniffed the air.
Midnight walked quietly, her paws so soft on the grass. Buddy chased a butterfly, jumping and laughing. The butterfly danced away, and Buddy giggled, but then stopped. He looked around. Midnight looked around, too. Where was the path?
"Buddy, do you see the gate?" Midnight asked in a small voice. Buddy shook his head. "No, Midnight. I don’t see it. I see tall flowers everywhere."
Midnight felt a tiny worry in her tummy. Buddy felt a little worry, too. But they stayed close together. Midnight rubbed her head against Buddy. Buddy wagged his tail softly. "We can look together," Buddy said.
They walked side by side. The garden felt big. Flowers brushed Midnight’s whiskers. Leaves touched Buddy’s nose. Bees buzzed gently nearby. The sun made everything bright and friendly, but Midnight and Buddy could not see the gate.
Midnight stopped. "Maybe we are lost," she whispered. Buddy sat beside her. "It’s okay, Midnight. We are lost, but we are together."
Midnight smiled. Buddy smiled, too. They listened to the sounds of the garden. Birds sang sweet songs. Far above, clouds drifted like soft pillows. Midnight and Buddy stayed close and waited. Maybe someone would help, or maybe they could find a clue. They were a little worried, but they were not alone.
